These seven types of aluminum alloys cover flexible packaging materials, architectural profiles, vehicle structures, and aerospace hard aluminum, with an extremely wide range of applications. To help you understand them at a glance, I have divided them into two major categories: "non-heat-treatable" (strengthened by deformation) and "heat-treatable" (strengthened by aging):
Group 1: Non-heat-treatable (Work-hardening Alloys)

Features: Naturally soft, hardened by bending and stretching, excellent corrosion resistance, suitable for deep drawing or welded structures.
  • 5052 (Champion of Seawater Corrosion Resistance): High magnesium content, outstanding marine corrosion resistance, and good medium-strength toughness. Mainly used for marine fuel tanks, electronic enclosures, and automotive body panels, with very low risk of cracking during bending.
  • 3004 (Specialist for Aluminum Cans): Magnesium-manganese alloy, softer than 5052 but with unrivaled deep drawing and stretching performance. Used in the vast majority of global aluminum can bodies, thermos flask liners, and kitchenware.
  • 4045 (Brazing and Thermal Conductivity Expert): Silicon content up to 10%, low melting point, specially used for brazing sandwich layers (e.g., automotive radiators, air conditioning heat exchangers) to weld other aluminum alloys; not used as structural components itself.
Group 2: Heat-treatable (Age-hardening Alloys)

Features: Significantly increased strength through solution treatment and aging, but generally inferior corrosion resistance compared to Group 1.
  • 6063 (Extrusion Aesthetic King): Silicon-magnesium based, excellent extrudability, and the most beautiful anodized surface. Lowest strength (tensile strength ~240MPa), valued for its appearance, mainly used for doors, windows, curtain walls, radiators, and furniture tracks.
  • 6061 (All-round Structural Alloy): Contains additional copper and chromium compared to 6063, 40% higher strength (tensile strength ~310MPa) with good weldability. An all-rounder for frames, marine structures, mechanical parts, and bicycles.
  • 7021 (Vehicle Anti-collision Beams): Zinc-magnesium alloy, yield strength 30% higher than 6061, and regains strength through natural aging after welding. Specialized for automotive anti-collision beams, B-pillars, and other energy-absorbing safety components, rarely used in civilian applications.
  • 7075 (Aerospace Tough Guy): Zinc-copper alloy, strength comparable to low-carbon steel (tensile strength ~570MPa), but poor corrosion resistance and high cost. Only used for aircraft structural parts, precision molds, and high-end competitive equipment, selected only when extreme "lightweight and rigidity" is required.
